Get Into The Press
You may think that, as a small business, you don't actually
have anything which is newsworthy. Wrong! Here are a few general
ideas on the kind of stores that journalists regularly publish:
Create a benchmark
Publish a weekly or monthly statistic, which tracks over time
the behaviour of your customers.
Publish a rant
Be controversial. Write an article that flies in the face of conventional
management theory. Most journalists are happy to create drama
on their pages or programmes by challenging conventional wisdom.
Hold an event
Arrange a conference - online or offline - based on a very topical
theme. Invite the press. Make sure we have arranged controversial
or expert speakers and follow up with a summary of the events
proceedings. We get two major press releases from this - the first
is the invitation or announcement; the second is the summary.
Present an award
Consider hooking up with a trade body or recognised independent
management organisation and either sponsoring or judging the entrants.
Publish a report
Link up with a university or management body and conduct a piece
of research that is both useful to them and useful for PR purposes.
If the analysis and the written report are provocative or topical
enough, you're bound to get good coverage.
